Late start leads to dumped canoes Friday south of Fort Leonard Wood
BIG PINEY, Mo. (May 29, 2010) — Thirteen people dumped four canoes Friday night on Bald Ridge Creek off Highway TT outside the South Gate of Fort Leonard Wood, according to Duke Rural Fire Chief Ron Wyatt. “At first they said 11 people in the water, they didn’t know how deep the water was, and there were children involved,” Wyatt said. “We didn’t know what we had when we responded; we all headed down there and we found people who said one person was paralyzed from the waist down and one had a broken arm.” That led to an emergency call from Duke firefighters for additional ambulances; firefighters from the Rolla Rural Fire Protection District and Edgar Springs Fire Protection District were paged out for rescue boats and Rolla firefighters placed their dive team on standby for an emergency response. However, the people in the flipped boats — actually 13 people including two children — hadn’t explained to firefighters that the man paralyzed from the waist down was a paraplegic and his condition wasn’t due to being dumped into the water. “Luckily, he could swim,” Wyatt said. Nobody was actually hurt in the incident. Click here to read more on Pulaski County Daily News ...By Darrell Todd Maurina

One killed, one seriously injured in separate Sunday wrecks south of FLW
EVENING SHADE, Mo. (May 24, 2010) — Two separate Sunday crashes on Highway 17 southwest of Fort Leonard Wood killed a Plato man and seriously injured a Roby resident. According to Missouri State Highway Patrol reports, Claude G. Von Plueren, 63, of Plato, had been driving a 2010 Honda ATV northbound two miles north of Evening Shade when he slowed to make a left turn at 6:35 p.m. and a northbound 2004 Honda ATV driven by Donald Pate, 71, also of Plato, ran into the rear of Von Plueren’s ATV. Pate’s ATV overturned, ejecting him from the vehicle; he was airlifted to Cox South Hospital in Springfield where he was pronounced dead on Monday. Shortly after midnight Sunday, Nicholas W. Sommers, 27, of Roby, had been southbound on Highway 17 about seven miles north of Evening Shade when his 2007 Yamaha 1100 struck a small deer, ran off the right side of the roadway, overturned, and ejected Sommers, who had not been wearing a helmet and suffered serious injuries. In unrelated incidents, state troopers arrested Matthew D. Watkins, 19, of Waynesville, Jimmy T. Foster, 42, of Laquey, and Shawn L. Nichols, 45, of Laquey, on various charges.
