The South Central Missouri Civil War Round Table will be holding it's next meeting on 7 August 2011. The meeting is open to anyone with an interest or curiosity about the Civil War. The next meeting will cover highlights from previous meeting, discussion of by-laws and then a lecture on Civil War artillery followed by a Q&A session. The event is free and open to all, however, we ask that those 17 and younger are accompanied by an adult.

What are you looking for? / Need people interested in the Civil War

As you may or may not know there are groups across the country that study, promote, educate, discuss and share an interest in the American Civil War. Some of these groups, such as the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War and the Confederate Veterans of the Civil War, base their membership to a tie with an ancestor who served in the Civil War. Other groups, such as various round tables, fall into the category I mentioned earlier.
However, in Missouri the number of round table groups is VERY small and the ones that are active are nowhere near the south-central portion of the state.

I am putting forward a proposition to begin forming a Civil War round table in the Pulaski county area to serve mainly the counties of Laclede, Phelps and Pulaski but with the possibilities of also serving Camden, Maries, Miller and Texas counties as well.
The initial goals of the group are:
1.      To promote, educate and stimulate interest in, and discussion of, all aspects of the American Civil War.
2.      Provide regular fellowship with others interested in Civil War history, study and analysis. This fellowship will bolster camaraderie, increase knowledge and show respect to other members.
3.      To honor those whose lives were altered during the mid-19th century. This includes both Confederate and Union soldiers as well as civilians.
4.      To provide unbiased and historically sound information to members, students and the community.
5.      Being mindful that views of the Civil War differ as much now as they did then, a major goal is to ensure that viewpoints are heard and that ensuing discussions are held rationally and with mutual respect. There is never a “winner” or “loser”, just vary viewpoints and understandings. The goal will never be to “convert” someone to a point of view, but to gain a better understanding of the Civil War through different points of view.
This would be done through monthly meetings that include:
1.      Book discussions.
2.      Movie viewings and discussion.
3.      Theme and issues discussion (battles, personalities, tactics, social and cultural topics, etc.)
4.      Quarterly (or more) visits and discussions with authors, scholars and other Civil War authorities.
5.      Field trips to period-related locations and battlefields.
6.      Involvement in preservation of monuments, cemeteries, related sites and events.
If you have read this far and are interested I need your help and participation. Getting something like this off the ground requires time and resources of more than just one individual. More details such as location, election of officers, focus, etc. will be sorted out once an initial group has come together and an exploratory committee is formed.
What is needed now is to get the word out by whatever means possible to get people who are interested aware that this group exists. I have setup a website at http://scmcwrt.civilwarmo.info and there is a survey there. Would you please be so kind as to fill it out and pass the link on to others who you believe may be interested? Also, if you are aware of people who you think might be interested could you please pass this email on to them as well?
If you have any questions, comments, suggestions, concerns, or anything, please feel free to contact me at http://scmcwrt.civilwarmo.info/?page_id=16
Thanks!
