What are you looking for? / kitchen designer
« on: May 23, 2009, 07:24:14 PM »
Maybe I've been watching too many of the home improvement shows but:

I would like to renovate my kitchen, taking it all the way down to the studs and I need the help of a contractor or kitchen designer to help plan it out .   The house is really old and the flow of the kitchen is terrible. The cabinets all need to be replaced ,I think they were probably handmade back in the '50s. Does anyone know of anyone I can hire to help with the layout and measurements for cabinets and everything else that it requires? My husband is an electrician and plumber so that part is taken care of.

I just heard on the Scanner / bound and gagged in W-Ville??????
« on: April 20, 2009, 08:27:37 PM »
Last night I heard on the scanner the cops called to Dogwood Trailer park, lot 19( W-Ville) . The man had been bound and gagged and injured in some way  "a fair amount of blood " in his residence and the assailant had ran out the back door. I went to bed and didn't hear the end of it.
Did they find who did this ? Was it random or a personal attack?

Gardening / Tomatoes
« on: March 10, 2009, 11:55:18 PM »
I started my tomato plants inside this year. For the past couple years I have bought them from area nurseries .  In the past I haven't had much success starting them indoors but I have the garden fever going so I'm gonna try.  I'm trying some new varieties that I can't find around here anywhere. Solar Fire, Heatwave and Sunmaster are some of the varieties. The heatwave does really well with an abundance of medium sized tasty tomatoes(good for canning) It gets so hot here in the summer my tomatoes always poop out from the heat.

What is your favorite variety to grow in this area?

Down Home Cooking / st. patricks day dinner
« on: March 10, 2009, 11:42:03 PM »
I usually do the New England boiled dinner for St. Pat's day. Thats corned beef potatoes, carrots and  cabbage( I add onions and garlic too). I simmer the corned beef covered with water for about 3 - 3 1/2 hours then add the vegetables and cook until they are tender.

Does anyone have any other traditional Irish recipes that they cook for St. Pats?
Irish soda bread maybe ? Green beer.  ;D

Down Home Cooking / cream puffs
« on: February 24, 2009, 10:20:02 PM »
I made these last night, surprisingly easy to make.

Cream Puff

1/2 cup butter
1 cup water
1 cup flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
4 eggs

bring water and butter to a boil, whisk in flour and salt, take off the heat and then beat in one egg at a time. drop tablespoonfuls on ungreased baking sheet. bake at 425 for 20 minutes or until golden brown and centers dry.

I made a small box of instant vanilla pudding and just cut the cream puffs in half and filled the cooled cream puffs with the chilled pudding and sprinkled with powdered sugar.

Movie Review / Paul Blart: Mall Cop
« on: February 16, 2009, 10:28:13 AM »
Cute movie to take the kids to but very predictable. Normal, everyday, average guy takes over the bad guys.  They  invaded the mall, where he is a security guard and put his loved ones in danger. Cute  :)

Crime Stopper / New Credit Card Scam
« on: February 06, 2009, 05:20:19 PM »
New Credit Card ScamSnopes.Com says this is true.[/] To verify see this site:[/] [/]http://www.snopes.com/crime/warnings/creditcard.asp[/]

This one is pretty slick since they provide YOU with all the information, except the one piece they want.

Note, the callers do not ask for your card number; they already have it.. This information is worth reading. By understanding how the VISA & Master Card Telephone Credit Card Scam works, you'll be better prepared to protect yourself.

One of our employees was called on Wednesday from 'VISA', and I was called on Thursday from 'Master Card'. The scam works like this: Caller: 'This is (name), and I'm calling from the Security and Fraud Department at VISA. My Badge number is 12460. Your card has been flagged for an unusual purchase pattern, and I'm calling to verify. This would be on your VISA card which was issued by (name of bank). Did you purchase an Anti-Telemarketing Device for $497.99 from a Marketing company based in ?'

When you say 'No', the caller continues with, 'Then we will be issuing a credit to your account. This is a company we have been watching and the charges range from $297 to $497, just under the $500 purchase pattern that flags most cards. Before your next statement, the credit will be sent to (gives you your address), is that correct?'

You say 'yes'. The caller continues - 'I will be starting a Fraud investigation. If you have any questions, you should call the 1- 800 number listed on the back of your card (1-800 -VISA) and ask for Security.'

You will need to refer to this Control Number. The caller then gives you a 6 digit number. 'Do you need me to read it again?'

Here's the IMPORTANT part on how the scam works. The caller then says, 'I need to verify you are in possession of your card'. He'll ask you to 'turn your card over and look for some numbers'. There are 7 numbers; the first 4 are part of your card number, the next 3 are the security Numbers that verify you are the possessor of the card. These are the numbers you sometimes use to make Internet purchases to prove you have the card. The caller will ask you to read the 3 numbers to him. After you tell the caller the 3 numbers, he'll say, 'That is correct, I just needed to verify that the card has not been lost or stolen, and that you still have your card. Do you have any other questions?' After you say No, the caller then thanks you and states, 'Don't hesitate to call back if you do, and hangs up.
[/]

You actually say very little, and they never ask for or tell you the Card number. But after we were called on Wednesday, we called back within 20 minutes to ask a question. Are we glad we did! The REAL VISA Security Department told us it was a scam and in the last 15 minutes a new purchase of $497.99 was charged to our card.

Long story - short - we made a real fraud report and closed the VISA account. VISA is reissuing us a new number. What the scammers want is the 3-digit PIN number on the back of the card[/] Don't give it to them. Instead, tell them you'll call VISA or Master card directly for verification of their conversation. The real VISA told us that they will never ask for anything on the card as they already know the information since they issued the card! If you give the scammers your 3 Digit PIN Number, you think you're receiving a credit. However, by the time you get your statement you'll see charges for purchases you didn't make, and by then it's almost too late and/or more difficult to actually file a fraud report.

What makes this more remarkable is that on Thursday, I got a call from a 'Jason Richardson of Master Card' with a word-for-word repeat of the VISA scam. This time I didn't let him finish. I hung up! We filed a police report, as instructed by VISA. The police said they are taking several of these reports daily! They also urged us to tell everybody we know that this scam is happening.

Down Home Cooking / Bulgogi
« on: February 04, 2009, 06:35:48 PM »
I made an attempt to make beef bulgogi tonight . It turned out OK but not the best.  Ingredients were beef sliced for bulgogi, soy sauce ,veg. oil, sesame oil, sugar, garlic and green onion. Marinated overnight.

What is the trick to get this tender ?  Does anyone have a good recipe? I did mine under the broiler because the burner on the grill is blown out. Maybe that was part of the problem? It needed some extra spice also. Maybe red pepper flakes?

Down Home Cooking / Elephant Soup
« on: January 25, 2009, 11:01:12 PM »
ELEPHANT SOUP  [/t][/t]
1 med. elephant (African is best)
500 gal. hot water
2 pecks onions, finely chopped
1 bu. potatoes, peeled and sliced
5 shovels salt
3 shovels pepper
1 1/2 cases Worcestershire sauce
5 qts. peanut oil (optional)
10 bottles rum (or more if cooking time is longer or if you're expecting more than 8 guests)
Coke to taste
Mix 1 1/2 oz. of rum with coke; drink. Wash and dry elephant (don't use soap as this will spoil flavor). Chop into bite sized chunks. In back of 1/2 ton truck (or rented U-Haul) pour hot water. Have another rum and coke and add elephant, spuds and other ingredients. Allow to simmer. Meanwhile, finish first bottle of rum. Stir mixture using canoe paddle or small outboard motor. Allow to simmer until vegetables are tender and meat falls apart. When guests arrive, start them off with remaining rum. This recipe will serve 3800 people. If more are expected, 2 chopped rabbits may be added. Do this only if necessary as most people do not like to find a hare in their soup. (The peanut oil won't really add to the soup, but it's the way the elephant would have wanted it!)[/t]

Down Home Cooking / Heart Shaped Cake
« on: January 25, 2009, 03:57:08 PM »
I make one of these for Valentines Day for the grandkids every year.  Just use 8 or 9 inch pans whatever you have. One round pan and one square pan. Using a regular box cake mix, I separate the batter between the two pans and bake as directed. Cool, then cut the round cake in half and place it on two sides of the square cake making the heart shape.  Frost the cake and decorate .

Games and Toys / Qwirkle
« on: January 14, 2009, 09:52:06 AM »
We got Qwirkle around Christmas time and we've had alot of fun playing it. The game is similar to dominos but uses tiles with different shapes and colors. (Yes we're bored!) We've also tried Quiddler ,Five Crowns and Blokus.  Can anyone suggest any other games to try. I'm too cheap to buy the Xbox ,Wii and other game systems ,so its back to the basic board and card games. :)
