cell phones
« on: April 09, 2009, 03:31:44 PM »
CHEYENNE — In one month, a Cheyenne teenager sent 10,000 text messages and received about the same — all while her family's plan did not include texting.
That means the family's provider — Verizon — charged them for each incoming and outgoing text message.
The girl's parents, Gregg and Jaylene Christoffersen, thought texting had been disabled, so one can imagine their surprise when they got the monthly phone bill and it asked for $4,756.25.
"It just hit us like a rock, like you're stepping into a bus," Gregg Christoffersen said.
The bill was legit.
Dena Christoffersen, 13, had apparently been sending most of these messages at school. That's more than 300 texts within an eight-hour period every Gregg Christoffersen was shocked to see his daughter's texting bill. (9News)day for the whole month.  Needless to say, it drew attention away from what she should have been doing: paying attention in class.
"She went from A's and B's one semester to F's in two months," Dena's dad said.
Hours after the enormous bill arrived, Gregg Christoffersen took a hammer to his daughter's phone.
He and Jaylene also grounded Dena until the end of school.
"I felt really bad, and I have learned my lesson," Dena said, with her head down.
Since she lost her phone, Dena's grades have gone up, and the texting is down to zero.
As for the phone bill, the family says Verizon has been willing to knock it down to a reasonable level.
The Christoffersens are asking school administrators at Johnson Junior High School to crack down on cellphone use during school.

Took me forever to get AT&T (then Cingular) to disable texting and downloading on my duaghter's phone - every month I would get billed and every month I would be on the phone with them for an hour or more, waiting mostly. I finally got it where she could not do anything but make calls on it. They would always tell me they would credit my bill the next month, but it never happened.

Why does a 13 year old need a cell phone?

Answer:  They don't !

Why was a 13 year old allowed to take a cell phone to school?

Answer:  got me !

Why was a 13 year old allowed to use the phone at school by the teachers?  (most schools have policy's regarding electronic devices at school)

Answer:  got me !

This is my only response to teens who send, and parents that are oblivious to 10,000 sent/received text messages in a one month time period:

My parents bought our son a cell phone for Christmas.
It is a pay as you go phone, and he is not allowed to take it to school.
Some people are like Slinkies... Not really good for anything, but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs.

I'm with you on this one.  I've never sent a text message and probably wouldn't know how anyway.  I think texting is 20 cent per sent/received message on AT&T.  I had the texting feature disabled on my account.  It did take several calls to get it disabled.  I suspect the customer service representatives are probably required to dick around with the customers to maximize their profits.

Ive been with at&t now for about 6 yrs, and everytime ive had to have anything done it was done either when i called in, went into the store here in st roberts or the corprate store in springfield. I prefer to do things at the corprate store because its usually quicker and for somethings like new sim cards free.

I also didnt give my kids a cell phone till my youngest became a senior in high school and got a job.  Yes schools have an no use policy, but from what i have seen they do not enforce it.  I would prefer that they were not allowed on the school buses or in school they are to distracting.

Every new mass communication technology is met with this response.

Radio, newspaper, telephone, tv, email, cell phones, IM's online, IM's on cell phones, Twitter....

Nobody believes they will ever use or need it.

i got my son a cell phone when he was 13 but he cant text or get on the internet. he knows not to use it in school but i got it for him so that way if his dad and i arent at home he can contact us or if he is out riding his dirt bike or 4 wheeler and something goes wrong he can call us. my son has a great head on his shoulders and can trust him. he knows if he does wrong he will be punished so he walks the straight and narrow.
Go ahead and blame me....Everyone else does
