PLATO/NEWBURG, Mo. (July 25, 2009) — Two separate crashes on Friday just outside Pulaski County injured two area residents. According to Missouri State Highway Patrol reports, Angela K. Richards, 21, of Plato, had been southbound on Route 17 about four miles north of Roby when she ran off the right side of the road in her 1995 Chevrolet and hit a tree, suffering mnor injuries but totaling her car. About two hours later, troopers responded to another crash on Highway J about a quarter-mile south of the Interstate 44 junction at Exit 169 in which Jackie L. Morgan, 30, of Newburg, had been riding a 2003 Harley Davidson motorcycle southbound on Highway J when he crossed the center line at 4:55 p.m. and struck a 2004 Cadillac driven by Daquanna J. Snider, 57, of Waynesville, who was also headed southbound but had pulled off the roadway. Both vehicles sustained minor damage but Morgan suffered serious injuries and was flown to Springfield for treatment. Click here to read more on Pulaski County Daily News ...

Darrell, check your information. The story that was given to us is, she was stopped checking her mail, and was pulling out to make a u-turn and clipped Jackie. Also, she (as we understand it was older) paniced and left the scene and went to her  house, leaving Jackie there with a torn up leg.

I am confused, the patrol report says that both the car and the bike were driven to a nearby residence...Who drove the bike?

In my past experience when a bike rider is down his fellow bikers try their best to drive the bike home for him and save a tow bill. And the fellow bikers come from out of nowwhere to the scene.

Tho, ususally don't the reports say, removed from the scene by family member, friend, so something like that.. Seems like I have seen that a lot.

So which version is right?  Don't know Jackie, but known Trena for a long time.  Prayers are with them for a full recovery.

I don't know, but the police report does not make sense. It says both vehicles we going southbound on J hwy, and that Jackie crossed the center line and struck the Cadillac. If they were both going southbound on the same road, and she was pulled off the road, how doe he hit her if he has crossed the centerline, which would have put him in the other lane?
If one vehicle was going north bound, and the other going southbound, then comeone crossing the centerline would have meant they hit head on. But they were both going southbound, and it said she was off the side of the road, and he crossed the centerline. If he crossed the centerline, he would no longer be in her side of the road. So how could he have hit her.
Now the way it was explained to me, both were going southbound, and she was off the side of the road, checking her mail....as Jackie came by on her bike, she swung out to do a u-turn to turn into her driveway, and clipped Jackie's foot with her bumper.
Then after Jackie got off her bumper, (he never even dumped the bike) she just drove off to her drive way and house, leaving him there.
Again, this is how Jackie described it, and I have never known Jackie to lie or not addmitt when he screwed up.

This is the same story I hear, Darrell is basing his story on the highway patrol report and isn't a speculator..

I thought the same thing exactly!  The way the report reads it definitely implies it was Jack's fault!  They (the HP) need to clarify this one way or another.  Also, if it is true the cager left the scene, why wasn't there a ticket issued?

I'm not sure who can request a clarification; if it has to be a party or member of the family, but it wouldn't hurt if some of you contacted the patrol and spoke to them about it...I have seen them change the online report at times. Sgt. Crain I think, but ask Darrell for sure. I think he is the PIO

The MSHP report is WRONG!  This PISSES ME OFF!  Jackie did everything he could to avoid the accident and any IDIOT that looks at the accident site can tell that Jackie was on HIS side of the road and the other driver was on the WRONG side of the road.  Is this how MSHP "investigates" accidents?  I'm disappointed and disgusted that the MSHP would screw this up so bad; not to mention the other crap that's gone on since the accident.  I've always held the MSHP in high regard, but this trooper needs to pull his head out of his a$$ & get it right.

I just hope this gets straightened out and it is made clear that this was NOT Jackie's fault. He is going to be going through a difficult time for the next several months because of someone else's ignorance and it isn't fair. My thoughts are with him and his family right now.

I think most get who was in the wrong here..

Personally I can't easily comment on it due to liability.

The highway patrol is to blame for sure if he didn't cross the line. This will all come out in the courts I am sure..

I feel your pain and my thoughts have been with him all weekend.. This is another insane incident, people need to wake the F*&^ up..

I seem to recall an accident not to long ago where it was intially reported that the mother did NOT have her children strapped in-- that they went back a few days later and fixed the report---- Is that possible here?

Theres been alot of locals Killed and or maimed on local highways. People here simply dont give a damn about Bikers. Its a damn travesty to have something like this happen to anyone, let alone Jackie. Ive not always been there for the family when I should have......but He and his family has always been there for me. I hope Karma has its way with the person that did this......especially if she drove off and left him there on the highway. If someone here talks to Jack let him know if he needs anything at all to let me know. Ill do whatever I can.

I have just sent an e-mail to Sgt. Crain of the state patrol inquiring into this.

Rick is right -- there are liability issues involved.

I wasn't on the scene so all I can do is rely on the state patrol reports for coverage, at least until I can get clarification of what is going on. Sgt. Crain is good at getting back to media inquiries and I'm sure I'll know more when he's looked into it.

It sure seems like the blatant disregard for bikes by cagers is growing at a rampant pace.  It's always been a problem, no doubt, as I've been riding street bikes since the early 80's and have had more than my fair share of close calls.  However, with the advent of cell phones, texting, etc, the problem is definitely worse than it has ever been, imo.  The problem is that our "leaders" believe the best way to fix it is to have the bikers wear helmets which is only treating the symptoms instead of the real problem!

I am sure many of you have heard, Jackie is loosing his foot today due to this tragic accident. Jackie is a very young man, who still has allot to offer. He is a Mason and a Shriner, is is the main person who organizes and sets up the BBQ cook off at the shrine club, and refuses to have a gate fee, because he wanted to always ensure that families with kids could attend. That is the type of person he is.
If you don't know him, his dad owned Alarmco, and Jackie would take a call 24/7 to come out to help you (like me always locking my keys in the car) fixing or changing locks, alarms, and much more. I hate to hear when someone of his caliber has to go through this. I know Jackie, and he will fight through this, and he will adjust to having a prosthetic foot, but it could have been avoided by just a simple look both ways over a shoulder.
Say a prayer or take a moment today to think of Jackie and what he must be going through. And next time you are about to drive off, please look around and make sure you see everything out there. Remember, if you have not seen a bike today, its because you were not looking.

Sgt. Crain of the Missouri State Highway Patrol has e-mailed me and given me permission to post this here as well:
_____

Darrell,

I spoke with the investigating officer and since his initial investigation at the scene he has received additional statements and information. Based upon that he advised that his report will reflect that the MC did not cross the center line. Hope things are going well for you.

Thanks,

From MHP crash report:
UPDATED INFORMATION AS OF 07-27-09-- OCCURRED AS VEH 2 WAS STOPPED ON NB SHOULDER OF RT J FACING SOUTH BOUND. VEH 2 ENTERED THE ROADWAY, CROSSED THE CENTER LINE AND STRUCK VEH 1.

From what it reads now, she was on the WRONG side of the road (northbound) and came back into Jackie's lane to continue going the same direction (southbound).

I don't disagree with what has been said about drivers needing to be watchful of motorcycles, BUT I have seen ALOT of bikes going way to fast and passing where they should not be. It's everyone's responsbility to drive safely. I pulled out of a road this morning and had a biker come up on me and speed around me because my vehicle had not got up speed as quickly as they would have liked, and it was not in a passing zone.

If traffic has to slow down then MAYBE you pulled out when you shouldn't have and should have waited for the traffic to clear.  Countless times have I heard the ol' "I thought I had more time....." excuse.  Not trying to flame you or accuse you of anything just trying to give the possibility of another view point.

Also, I don't believe vehicles are "out to get" bikers.  Bikes are most definitely harder to see and sometimes more difficult to gauge their speed.  Heck, a year or so ago I almost pulled out in front of a biker coming across the overpass on 28 hwy as I legitimately couldn't see them because the way the overpass obstructs the view there.  However, since then I am MUCH more cautious pulling off of eastbound I44 there and take more time sincerely looking for traffic.

Nope, nothing was coming, had a clear view. My little 4 cylinder just does not get up and go quick. They come flying up behind me and flew right on past me. Didn't bother me any, just feeling like a lot of blame is being put on vehicles, when everyone should be careful. Like I said I don't disagree with anything that has been said, just pointing out there are bikers that need to be a little more careful too.

I rode with a friend a while back on his bike on the Interstate. Will NEVER do that with someone I don't know very well again. Over 100 MPH on the interatate, swerving in out out of traffic. It was totoal BS and scared the hell out of me. Didn't impress me a bit, but very much p***ed me off.

I think when the gas was so high, a lot of people bought bikes just to save money and you can tell the inexperienced riders.  We had a group of crotch rockets go past us yesterday near Eureeka where there are curves and blind spots all along that road.  There was about 40 of them and in that close group were going 60-65 mph, crossing the centerline, etc.  My husband has been riding a bike since he was 9 and he was freaking out..."look at that crap!!  have you ever seen anything like that??"  Oh yes...there are bad bikers about.
....and that night as the moon crossed the mountain, one more Coyote was heard...

I'm sure I'm a little biased but the majority of "dangerous" riding does seem to involve the crotch rockets.  Like a buddy of mine always says;  "Don't call 'em a biker tell you've seen 'em ride".
