House approves Fiscal Year 2010 budget

Congressman Ike Skelton

House approves Fiscal Year 2010 budget
WASHINGTON, D.C. (April 12, 2009) — On April 2, the House of Representatives approved a resolution setting forth the federal budget priorities for fiscal year 2010 by a vote of 233 to 196. I supported this fiscally responsible plan, which, in addition to addressing many important priorities domestically and abroad, would also cut the national deficit nearly two-thirds by 2013. The budget would allow for middle class tax relief that is designed to boost our economy, as well as commit important allocations to preserve national security and give our veterans the benefits they deserve. As the Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee and as a rural Missouri Congressman, I believe the budget is good for our country and good for Missourians. On defense, the resolution would prioritize resources to restore military readiness that has been worn down by repeated deployments and more than seven years of war. It would also call on enhanced support to ensure personnel and their families have proper health care, pay, and family support. If we as a nation are to respect the contributions of those who wear the uniform, these allocations are nothing short of essential. Click here to read more on Pulaski County Daily News ...

Skelton says House defense budget bill funds numerous projects for Missouri
WASHINGTON, D.C. (June 25, 2009) — Congressman Ike Skelton (D-Mo.), chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, announced that the House-approved Fiscal Year 2010 National Defense Authorization bill includes more than $188.77 million for projects at Fort Leonard Wood and Whiteman Air Force Base. The projects included in the bill for Fort Leonard Wood are $5.57 million for an addition to the dental clinic; $7.8 million for an addition to the health clinic; $17 million for a wheeled vehicle driver’s course; $19.5 million for a Warrior in Transition complex; $27 million for a digital training facility; and $99 million for a training barracks. “I’m committed to making sure Fort Leonard Wood has what it needs to accommodate the growing number of soldiers on post and offer the quality of life Americans expect for our men and women in uniform,” said Skelton. Skelton says defense bill supports the troops and their families

Congressman Ike Skelton

Skelton says defense authorization bill supports the troops and their families
WASHINGTON, D.C. (Aug. 2, 2009) — I consider myself blessed to serve as Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, which from my perspective is the best committee in Congress. The committee’s 62 members come from every corner of the country and reflect diverse political philosophies, but together we find common purpose in our efforts to do our very best to provide the necessary resources to keep Americans safe and protect U.S. national security interests. Each year, the House Armed Services Committee plays its constitutional role by preparing a defense authorization bill. While many people may immediately think of the major weapon systems and military hardware authorized in this bill, I am particularly proud of what this legislation would do to make life better for our troops and their families.
